During Black History Month, the City of Redlands recognizes Israel Beal, an early Redlands pioneer. Born into slavery on April 10, 1848, Israel “Doc” Beal was among those freed by the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. He later served as a teamster traveling with the U.S. Army. Beal became a Redlands pioneer, property owner, builder, and business owner.
