They are an easy bird to identify from a distance because they hold their wings in a distinctive v-shape and wobble side to side as they ride thermals sniffing out carrion. From underneath, they appear black except for a lighter tail and trailing edge of the wings. A great ending for a rescued wild turkey vulture who "couch surfed" at the Detroit Zoo . . . Detroit Zoological Society staff recently rescued a fledgling turkey vulture who became trapped in a stairwell on a neighboring golf course in Huntington Woods. The bird was not yet strong enough to return to its nest.
