Wagner’s last complete opera, ‘Parsifal’ was premiered in Bayreuth in 1882 - the culmination of 25 years of intermittent work on the project. The “Bühnenweihfestspiel,” as Wagner called it, is loosely based on ‘Parzival,’ a medieval romance by Wolfram von Eschenbach, yet it explores themes that fascinated Wagner from Eastern spiritual philosophy.
