We start a new series looking at the art of crewel work. Crewel embroidery - also known as crewelwork - is a type of surface embroidery that uses wool thread and a wide variety of stitches. The term crewel is thought to have origins in Wales where the term referred to wool thread. Embroidering with wool threads literally goes back thousands of years. When most people think of crewel - they think of the Jaobean era (17th century) or the resurgence of this type of work in the 1970s. This piece dat
