This is #VDOT’s version of “The Bridges of Madison County.” OK, we admit concrete bridges don’t have quite the romantic allure of the covered bridges depicted in the aforementioned novel. But in the early 1900s they certainly earned the affection of transportation engineers, one of whom may be depicted in this old photo from West Hoover Road (Route 609) in Madison County. Reinforced concrete bridges proved to be more durable and cost-effective to maintain than their wood and steel predecessors.
