Why do our twin telescopes beam lasers into the sky? To sharpen astronomical images. These lasers create ‘artificial stars’ as part of an innovative technique called adaptive optics, which corrects the blurring caused by Earth’s atmospheric turbulence. Fun fact: AO’s resolution is so fine, you can distinguish between individual headlights on a car in San Francisco from Hawaiʻi! Learn more from our AO ʻwizard’ Peter Wizinowich, Keck Observatory’s expert optical scientist: www.keckobservatory.org/

Taking Super Sharp Astronomical Images with Adaptive Optics | ESO FriendsofNASA.org: Turbulence in our atmosphere blurs images of the cosmos, but astronomers have a trick up their sleeve: adaptive optics. Using powerful lasers and fast deformable mirrors we can correct this blurring in real time and obtain extremely sharp astronomical images. In this episode of Chasing Starlight, we show you how this amazing technology works and how it is implemented in our telescopes. Credit: European Southern

Explaining The Universe on Instagram: "@ExplainingTheUniverse teaches you something NEW everyday day 🧠💫 High-powered telescopes use a combination of large apertures, precise optics, and advanced imaging technology to observe extremely faint or distant objects. Their most important feature is aperture size — the diameter of the main mirror or lens. A larger aperture gathers more light, letting the telescope reveal dim galaxies, nebulae, and fine details that smaller instruments can’t capture. M
