Substitute Tom Watson has scored a stoppage-time winner and Sunderland has rallied to beat Sheffield United 2-1 in the Championship playoff final and earn promotion to the Premier League.

With 95 minutes played at Wembley, only one man on the pitch was guaranteed to be at a Premier League club next year and that was the 19-year-old Sunderland winger Tommy Watson – on as a substitute and already looking lively.

Sunderland secured promotion to the Premier League on Saturday after defeating Sheffield United 2-1 with an extraordinary injury-time winner in the most valuable match in soccer, as the Championship playoff final is known.
