Don Sweeney celebrated 10 years as GM of the Boston Bruins. And it was no coincidence that on that day, the Bruins announced a contract extension for Sweeney that will last through the 2027-28 season.

If the Bruins’ offseason doesn’t put the team on a productive track, Sweeney’s extension won’t protect him. He is every bit as fireable as he was on Monday. Any team that can’t afford to buy out two years of anyone isn’t a franchise to be taken seriously.

The move comes a month after team president Cam Neely said he needed to think about whether to keep dON Sweeney around after a decade in which the Bruins have seen unprecedented regular-season success followed largely by playoff flops.
