The morning after National Guard troops appeared on the streets of the District on Tuesday night, D.C. Police Chief Pamela A. Smith said that the federal surge could “help me do the things I need to do” to reduce crime and build on a federal partnership.

The altercation came as hundreds of federal officers patrolled in the nation's capital as part of President Donald Trump's crackdown on crime.

WASHINGTON — Residents in one Washington, D.C., neighborhood lined up Wednesday to protest the increased police presence after the White House said the number of National Guard troops in the nation’s capital would ramp up and federal officers would be the streets around the clock.
