Overnight, 3-6 inches of snow blanketed southeast Michigan making morning commutes to work Thursday treacherous and closing hundreds of schools and districts, including the Detroit Public Schools, the largest one in the state.

Most of Michigan's Lower Peninsula could see significant snow accumulation Wednesday into Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

A winter storm brought snow to most of Michigan Wednesday evening into Thursday morning. Snow accumulations between 3-6 inches were expected in some portions of Southeast Michigan. Some areas around and south of I-94 may have seen a wintry mix that includes freezing rain or sleet, which led to a light glaze of ice accumulations.

Southeast Michigan is now predicted to see anywhere between 5-12 inches of snow as a winter storm hits the entire Lower Peninsula.

The far southeast corner of Michigan will be the only spot with a mixture of various winter weather types. This means we have to look at snow totals and some freezing rain accumulation.

EST the National Weather Service issued an updated winter storm warning valid from 1 p.m. EST until Thursday 7 a.m. EST for Huron, Sanilac, St. Clair and Macomb counties.

Fresh off a winter storm, Michigan residents can expect another round of new snow this weekend, especially in southern Lower Peninsula and lake effect areas, the National Weather Service said. "Snowfall amounts are expected to be near 6 inches close to the Michigan border with lesser amounts farther south,
