"Measles is preventable with two doses of a vaccine, which is proven to be very safe and effective. To stop these outbreaks, countries must urgently strengthen routine immunization and conduct targeted vaccination campaigns in high-risk communities," said Daniel Salas, responsible for immunization at PAHO.
Measles — once on the verge of being defeated globally — is surging again, thanks to vaccine skepticism. A high-profile outbreak in Texas has attracted the most attention, but the problem is worldwide.
State health officials announced Monday that the measles outbreak in Texas, which affected 762 people since late January, has officially ended.
Confirmed cases of measles in Canada are nearly three times higher than in the US, despite Canada's far smaller population.
Texas hasn’t reported a new outbreak-related measles case in nearly a month — a hopeful sign that one of the largest outbreaks the United States has seen in decades is starting to slow. But the measles threat hasn’t faded as new outbreaks and growing case counts in other states add to the national tally.
