Respawn's battle royale game Apex Legends debuted six years ago this month, and parent company Electronic Arts has now hinted that an "Apex 2.0" could be in the works--but it won't launch soon.

Electronic Arts is apparently preparing a significant update for Apex Legends, informally referred to as Apex 2.0.

Apex Legends is still available as a free-to-download title on the Switch eShop and has received multiple updates since its launch on Nintendo's system.

Speaking in October, EA CEO Andrew Wilson said Apex Legends ‘ latest season had fallen short of expectations, but that it was trying to improve the existing game experience through updates, rather than planning a full Version 2, which he said in the context of live service games, “has almost never been as successful as the Version 1 thing”.

During EA's Q2, Wilson pushed back against the idea of an Apex 2.0 to fix the franchise, but has now revealed it's in the pipeline.

However, don’t expect “Apex 2.0” to arrive anytime soon. Wilson confirmed that the “more major update” will only be launched after the next Battlefield game, likely to keep both of the publisher’s shooters from cannibalising each other in terms of retaining players. As EA puts it, “we probably wouldn't drop that on top of a Battlefield launch.”
