US stocks fell on Friday as investors reacted to the threat of more possible tariffs from the Trump administration while digesting a jump in consumer expectations for inflation and an overshadowed monthly jobs report.

The Dow was on pace for a 0.4% weekly gain, while the S&P 500 was up 0.5% so far and the Nasdaq Composite was 0.7% higher through Thursday, according to FactSet. The blame for the Dow being down so much, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq are rising, can be put on two stocks, those of Honeywell and Salesforce.

U.S. stock indexes are holding relatively steady on Friday following a mixed report on the U.S. job market that analysts said may not change much for financial markets. The S&P 500 was 0.1% higher in early trading and remained on track for a modest gain for the week.

The S&P 500 ( ^GSPC) gained 0.5%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average ( ^DJI) rose nearly 0.4%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite ( ^IXIC) was up nearly 0.3%.

Trump seemed to indicate the Japanese company was Nissan, but there was speculation that he had misspoken and meant to say Nippon Steel, which has been seeking to buy out the iconic American company.

The US stock market was little changed on Thursday, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite holding modest gains while the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped. Investors assessed a mixed set of corporate earnings and looked ahead to Friday’s key jobs report.
