Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud has been elected chairman and ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader secretary general of a new faction of the Jatiya Party (JaPa).

The Jatiya Party suffered yet another split today as a faction of the party announced Anisul Islam Mahmud as its acting chairman.

Although the latest gathering was billed as a “unity council”, it stopped short of merging the faction led by Anisul Islam Mahmud with other splinter groups.

Anisul Islam Mahmud told media that the council was held in compliance with due procedure and claimed it represented the "mainstream" JaPa.
