On day two of the conclave and after only four rounds of voting, Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected and will be known as Pope Leo XIV, the first-ever North American pope.
Leo urged an end to the ongoing wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. "I carry in my heart the suffering of the beloved Ukrainian people," he said. "Let us do everything possible to reach a genuine, just and lasting peace as soon as possible. May all prisoners be freed and children be able to return to their families."
Contrary to early reports, the new pontiff isn't a Cubs fan — and the Sox faithful couldn't be prouder. "It's a dream," Helen Principato said. From the tailgaters to the clubhouse, there's a hope that the team's fortunes are blessed.
Six weeks before American Cardinal Robert Prevost became Pope Leo XIV, the activist group Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) filed a complaint against him, along with other church leaders,
Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams was among the residents of the Windy City who reveled in Robert Prevost's election as the new pope. The newly christened Pope Leo XIV is a Chicago native, and Williams referenced the title he's likely to hold in his hometown:
Pope Leo XIV is the first Pope from the Order of St. Augustine, which suggests he will promote peace and dialogue.
