Grand Canyon National Park's North Rim is closed for the remainder of the 2025 season due to a wildfire that has destroyed the historic Grand Canyon Lodge, cabins and visitors center. Here's what do know if you have a trip planned.

A rapidly growing White Sage Fire, which started on July 9 approximately 15 miles southeast of Fredonia on Bureau of Land Management lands, has expanded to nearly 50,000 acres with zero containment as of July 14.

The visitor center and a wastewater treatment plant were among the 50 to 80 structures lost, the park superintendent said. The area was evacuated Thursday.

Authorities maintained the evacuation zones for the White Sage Fire north of the Grand Canyon as the fire grew expectantly.

Two fast-moving wildfires—the Dragon Bravo and White Sage fires—have scorched more than 45,000 acres, destroyed the iconic North Rim lodge and dozens of structures, and led to long-term closures in the Grand Canyon.

The Grand Canyon’s North Rim in Arizona also closed Thursday because of a wildfire on adjacent Bureau of Land Management land near Jacob Lake. The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office said it helped evacuate people from an area north of Jacob Lake and campers in the Kaibab National Forest nearby.

Heartbreak, tears and devastation swept across Utah as flames engulfed the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, destroying dozens of structures, including the nearly century-old Grand Canyon Lodge.

Grand Canyon National Park’s North Rim, Jacob Lake and surrounding areas of the forest were evacuated Thursday as a 1,000-acre fire burned nearby. U.S. Highway 89A is closed between Fredonia and Bitter Springs.
