Candidates from different wings of the Democratic Party won key races on Election Day 2025 in the biggest test since President Trump's victory last year.

An Impact Research poll from October showed Van Epps up by 8 points (52 percent to 44 percent). Democrats, however, are more motivated to turn out on Election Day, the poll found. Eighty-three percent of Democratic candidates said they are “extremely motivated,” compared to 71 percent of Republicans.

The race for mayor of Middletown is now complete. With all 24 election districts reporting, Mayor Joseph DeStefano has 2,685 votes, to 564 for challenger Joel Sierra, according to unofficial results posted by the Orange County Board of Elections. In a letter to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi last week, Michigan Republicans asked the federal government to provide “comprehensive oversight” of the state’s 2026 election. But the letter doesn’t specify what “comprehensive oversight” means.

City Council must vote by Dec. 31 to make the change, which could potentially improve voter turnout and save the city $1 million per election.
