The Toronto Blue Jays (25-25) were riding high after sweeping the San Diego Padres (28-21), but they fell back to .500 after losing 3-1 to the Tampa Bay Rays (24-26) on Friday night. Toronto is now a half-game behind the Boston Red Sox (27-26) for second place in the AL East heading into Saturday night's slate.

The San Diego Padres went to extra innings against the Toronto Blue Jays in their final game of the three game series looking for a win to snap a five game losing streak. A hit with a runner in scoring position would be required to give the Padres a chance to do that.
