Despite a Milford High School student not being the intended target of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents over the weekend, federal officials on Monday defended the decision to arrest the teenager.

ICE targeted the father with intelligence provided from local law enforcement, according to acting ICE Director Todd Lyons. However, since Da Silva was in the country illegally and was driving his father's car, he was detained, according to officials.

ICE was targeting Marcelo Gomes Da Silva's father, but the 18-year-old will remain in custody. A federal judge has blocked his deportation.
