ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. — Tropical Storm Chantal has left a devastating impact on Alamance County. The storm brought heavy rain, winds and flooding to many areas of the county. In response, the county has set up a call center to answer questions about the storm and its impact. The call center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Orange County and nearby areas experienced between five and nine inches of rainfall, causing significant flooding as Chantal moved through.
On the heels of Tropical Depression Chantal, climatologists are warning that storms like it could become more common.
Governor Stein surveyed storm damage in NC and thanked first responders, as efforts to restore utilities and roads continue post-storm.
According to the city, the Graham-Mebane Water Treatment Plant is still being repaired due to the tropical storm.
Tropical Storm Chantal caused four deaths and extensive flooding in central NC. Victims included residents swept away in vehicles and a boater at Jordan Lake. Governor Stein pledged storm aid and praised emergency responders' efforts.
Chantal, now a tropical depression, is expected to bring heavy rainfall to multiple states along the east coast on Monday, July 7.
People in Chapel Hill and Durham were able to use Hurricane Fran as a baseline to compare what they just saw with Tropical Storm Chantal.
