After an afternoon filled with tornado sirens, lightning strikes, torrential rain and visible cloud rotation near Iowa Speedway, IndyCar canceled Friday afternoon practice.
Chad Hahn, warning coordination meteorologist at the National Weather Service, also confirmed a tornado did not touch down in Newton or Jasper County. He said there was a strong rotating wall cloud on the storm, which along with the rotation identified on radar prompted the tornado warning.
Drivers and teams captured photos and videos of the storm making its way through the area. IndyCar reporters said tornado sirens were audible.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for Newton, including the Iowa Speedway on Friday, July 11. The warning was triggered by radar indicated rotation, according to the weather service, and continues until 3:15 p.m. Meanwhile in Ames, heavy rain caused flash flooding off University Avenue near Hilton Colosseum.
